First Lady Michelle Obama's new do has the approval of a very powerful man.

Following his official swearing-in ceremony on Sunday, President Barack Obama attended an Inauguration eve gala at the National Building Museum, where he complimented his wife's fresh look.

"To address the most significant event of the weekend, I love her bangs," Obama said, according to USA Today. "She looks good. She always looks good."

The First Lady debuted her cut in a photo released on her 49th birthday last Thursday – and showed it off (along with her Thom Browne dress) again at the Inauguration on Monday.

Selena Gomez: It Helps Being Friends with Taylor Swift and Vanessa Hudgens

Boyfriends come and go, but Selena Gomez has a few very special – and very, very famous – faces to depend on.

The starlet, 20, counts Taylor Swift, 23, and Vanessa Hudgens, 24, among her inner circle, and she has plenty of compliments for their support along the way.

"It’s helped having Taylor and Vanessa both be older than me," she told PEOPLE at her New York City acoustic concert benefit for UNICEF, the children's rights organization for which she is a goodwill ambassador. "They’ve kind of experienced a little bit more, and at the same time we’re experiencing the exact same things together."

Her pals are just a call away, and "it's nice just to be able to pick up the phone and be like, 'Ugh, I had this person say this and it's annoying,' and have someone understand and really get what you're going through," adds Justin Bieber's on-again, off-again girlfriend. "I think that's [our] main connection. I just enjoy having people in the business in my life because it helps."

She recently worked with Hudgens on Spring Breakers, a comedy following four college gals that arrives in theaters in March. “I feel like I want to be her," Gomez says of her costar. "She’s been such an incredible person, and she’s fantastic in [Spring Breakers]. "She’s a really good friend.”

And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, her feelings on Swift – whom she called "one of the most inspirational, positive, good-hearted people that I know" – were clear by an addition to her concert set-list: a cover of the Red singer's hit, "I Knew You Were Trouble." (Yes, she also learned a dance to her friend's tune, just before the two hit the Utah ski slopes in December with their boyfriends at the time.)

“I met [Swift] when she was 18. This is before [Swift's 2008 album] Fearless came out, and it was absolutely incredible to see someone so successful and so humble," she says. "I think she has been a big part of me kind of staying the way I am too."

Deadly Pills: A National Epidemic

01/19/2013 at 04:00 PM EST

Jace Uher-Flom's mom dies two weeks after her birth of an overdose of prescription drugs

Grant Delin

Drugs are now the No. 1 accidental killer in the U.S., with the vast majority of deaths caused by prescription meds. A look at how medicines that are now a part of everyday life can also turn families upside down forever.

The statistics are staggering, the medicines powerful and highly addictive: This year more Americans will die of drug over-doses than in any other type of accident – including car crashes. In most cases, those deaths are caused by pills in many people's medicine cabinets given to them by trusted doctors, left over from routine surgeries or prescribed to manage chronic conditions.

"Prescription drug overdoses are a serious nationwide problem," says Dr. Leonard Paulozzi of the C.D.C.'s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, "for which we haven't yet found a solution."

How did we get here? For the millions of Americans who suffer from chronic pain, heavy-duty painkillers are the wonder drugs that help them lead more comfortable lives. But in the past 20 years, as opiate painkillers have become more routinely prescribed, the number of people dying from them – as a result of misuse or accidentally – has skyrocketed.

Often those deaths are due to bad interactions with other substances: Combined with alcohol some antidepressants can cause dangerous spikes in blood pressure, and mixing pain pills with a few drinks "can depress the brain," says Paulozzi, "and lead to death."

It's a problem even the drug industry acknowledges, says Sharon Brigner, of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America: "These medicines can be an important tool – we tell anyone we talk to that medicines save and improve lives every day. But if misused, they can kill."

Jennifer Lopez: 'You Have to Follow Your Heart'

People Exclusive

01/18/2013 at 04:30 PM EST

Jennifer Lopez has many things: perma-radiance, Pucci dresses, lots and lots of Louboutins and a $250 million empire. But she's also a 43-year-old single mom trying to learn from her mistakes.

"I'm not a young girl anymore who can throw caution to the wind," says the mega-star, who is settled into a sofa, picking at a small bowl of sweet potato and corn mash after a daylong PEOPLE photo shoot.

By her side is Casper Smart, 25, her live-in boyfriend. But while the choreographer – whom she calls by his given name, Beau – makes Lopez very happy, she's quick to point out that after her split from Marc Anthony, the father of her 4-year-old twins, Max and Emme, she's not rushing things.

"I'm making decisions for three. . . . I'm Mama Bear," says Lopez. "I want to make sure everything's right. I have been hasty in the past. Super hasty."

Then again, this is not a woman who is afraid of big change. Last year the mogul who topped Forbes's Celebrity 100 List walked away from a multi-million-dollar gig judging American Idol.

Now – after a world tour with Smart by her side – she's applying her laser focus to reigniting her film career. In Parker, a heist movie costarring Jason Statham, Lopez tackles the kind of gritty part that evokes acclaimed roles like the one she played in 1998's Out of Sight.

"She came in with no airs and just mucked in like everyone else," says Statham. "Jennifer walked away from a lot of money on American Idol," adds director Taylor Hackford. "She said, 'You know what? This [acting] is what I want to do right now.' " Lopez identified with her character, a woman picking up the pieces after her divorce.

"At this point in my life, I lived enough to do great work," says Lopez. "I've really felt everything by now."

Britney Spears & Jason Trawick Split: Will She Be Okay?

Britney Spears and Jason Trawick

The new year has already been full of change for Britney Spears.

"She's left her gig as judge on The X Factor, her new puppy Hannah is gravely ill, and on Jan. 11 she announced she and fiancé Jason Trawick, 41, have called it quits after more than three years together.

While Spears, 31, told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement, "I'll always adore him, and we will remain great friends," a family source says the signer is "definitely upset about the split."

What tore the couple apart? Spears, who has two sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline, had hoped to start a family soon with Trawick, but he wasn't ready. Says the close source: "There were so many issues he wanted worked out before that" – including her neediness. "It was difficult for Jason to have his own life."

Adds an insider: "Britney is very insecure and has had a lot of trouble with jealousy." These insecurities may be heightened now. "[She] is very worried about being alone," says the family source. "She is upset, but for a long time she has treated him like a friend, not a romantic partner." The family source adds that some close to the singer, who had a breakdown in 2008, "are concerned about her future."

Harley Pasternak Blogs About the Benefits of Eating Avocados

01/16/2013 at 04:00 PM EST

Getty. Inset: Lou Rocco/ABC

Every morning I receive an email with the newest scientific studies published in the exercise and nutrition world. Once in a while, a study comes up that makes me excited enough that I have to blog about it. Below is one of these studies.

Researchers from UCLA's Center for Human Nutrition revealed some interesting new information on the health benefits of Hass avocados. The study was divided in to two groups – one ate hamburgers with fresh Hass avocado halves, and one ate them without the avocados.

Results showed significant heart health advantages when the avocado and the burger were eaten together, rather than the plain burger.

The group that ate the burger with the avocado had lower levels of inflammation indicators (a key risk factor for heart disease), lower triglyceride levels (a type of fat in the bloodstream that can lead to the hardening and narrowing of your arteries) and superior arterial blood flow than those that ate the burger plain.

I've always been a huge fan of avocados. A true superfood, they're high in fiber, vitamin E, cancer-fighting carotenoids, and perhaps most importantly, they're an amazing source of heart healthy monounsaturated fats.

Much like its healthy-fat containing cousins olives and almonds, avocados are calorically-dense, but they're also nutrient dense. Moderation is key, and you don't need much for your body to reap the benefits.

I find avocados are a great way to add some "richness" to many of my recipes and make for a healthier alternative to butter (on toast) and cream (in soups).

Below is a delicious tortilla soup recipe my clients really enjoy.  You can also find some great guacamole and smoothie recipes online.

Tortilla Soup with Avocado

Ingredients
4 medium corn tortilla(s)
½ tsp garlic powder
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
1 small yellow or white onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
2 medium ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
1 medium yellow pepper, finely chopped
1 ripe avocado, pitted and sliced length-wise
1 medium serrano or jalapeno chile, seeded and minced
3 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
2 Tbsp fresh cilantro, minced, divided
Salt (to taste)
½ tsp black pepper
¼ cup low-fat shredded cheese (optional)

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400ºF.
2. Create a mixture of the garlic powder and cayenne pepper. Dust both sides of each tortilla with the mixture, then cut each into strips, about 1-inch wide. Place on cookie sheet; bake until just crisp, about 9 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside.
3. Coat a medium pot with a light coat of cooking spray, and add chopped vegetables and sauté until soft – about 5 minutes.
4. Add broth, half the cilantro and salt and pepper and cook about 8 minutes.
5. Ladle soup into 4 bowls. Top each with the cheese, toasted tortilla strips, sliced avocado, and remaining cilantro. Serve hot. Serves 4

Britney Spears Steps Out in 'Love' Sweatshirt after Split

01/14/2013 at 03:50 PM EST

Britney Spears still believes in "love" – at least when it comes to wearing it.

The pop star, 31 – whose failed engagement to Jason Trawick, 41, was announced on Friday – grabbed coffee in L.A. on Monday, sporting a black and white sweatshirt with the four-letter word displayed in large letters across the front.

The former X Factor judge looked casual, wearing shades and her hair in a ponytail.

Once the split was official, a source told PEOPLE, "Britney had a lot of issues with Jason doing his own thing – in business and seeing his friends. In her perfect world he would have been home with her twenty-four/seven, so that was a point of contention; something they were always working on."

But she didn't seem too bent out of shape when she made her outing and grabbed two drinks to go, as she wore a happy grin the whole time.

Miss America Mallory Hytes Hagan: Five Things to Know

01/13/2013 at 04:00 PM EST

Miss American 2013 Mallory Hytes Hagan

CraigSjodin/ABC

The new Miss America is an Alabama-bred blonde beauty who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., and loves '80s pop music. But Mallory Hytes Hagan is more than just a pretty face who tap-danced her way into the judges' hearts on Saturday. Here are five things to know about the new Miss America:

1. Modern Day Rags to Riches?
At 18, Hagan moved to New York with only $1,000 in her pocket. "I just didn't know that $1,000 wasn't enough money," she told PEOPLE. "I look back at my parents now for letting me do it and I think, 'Are you crazy?' " I genuinely think they thought I'd be there for three weeks and move back. I hit the ground running and had three job offers in first day."

2. She Wants to Jump Out of a Plane!
Hagan claims she's not a risk taker, but she would love to go skydiving because it's "completely out of control" – the opposite of how she usually behaves. "I think it would be amazing," she said. "I'm truly a Capricorn, so I like to plan out what's going to happen. I think it's about the drive. I'd love to go skydiving. Why not?"

3. She's No Longer the 'Bridesmaid'
If it appeared that Hagan was genuinely shocked when her name was announced as the new Miss America it's because she was. "As a teen, I was third, second and first runner-up. In Miss New York, I was first runner-up twice. My thought process was, 'They're going to get another first runner up photo of me.' I'm thrilled to be here but I didn't expect it at all."

4. She Wants to Stop Sexual Abuse of Children

Her platform, Stop It Now! (which works to prevent child sexual abuse), is close to her heart because several of the women (and possibly some of the men) in her family were sexually abused as children, she told reporters in a press conference. "I never was, but it was something I was going through in my teenage years as my family was trying to find peace in that," she says. She thinks mandatory child sexual awareness education would be "an incredible step for America."

5. She Loves Cosmetics
She may not be different than many women with her interest in cosmetics, but Hagan wants to make a career out of it. A student studying advertising, communications and marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Hagan's dream job would be the global marketing director for a cosmetic company. As part of her duties as Miss America, Hagan will work with Artistry cosmetics. "This will be a wonderful internship," she said.

Lindsay Lohan Says Rejection Is 'Nothing Like Going to Jail'

01/10/2013 at 04:45 PM EST

Lindsay Lohan

WeirPhotos/ Splash News Online

Ever wonder what happens once Lindsay Lohan is cast in a film?

New York Times Magazine contributing writer Stephen Rodrick found out when he spent time with the actress on the set of The Canyons – an explicit Kickstarter-funded "microbudget" film penned by American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis.

In the nearly 8,000 word piece, Rodrick unveils a unique version of Lohan, 26, in which she goes on extended crying jags yet shows actual talent on set. Still, he depicts her behaving very unreliably (at one point actually fleeing from crew members to go out to lunch with her friends) and acting jealous of adult film star James Deen, her costar.

After arriving late to the first read-through of the film's script, Lohan lends her thoughts on her character, Tara, a failed actress who is financially dependent on her boyfriend, Christian (Deen).

"Rejection for an actress is formative," director Paul Schrader tells her.

"Well, it's nothing like going to jail, I can tell you that," Lohan replies.

While another incident Rodrick is witness to serves as a painful reminder of Lohan's dysfunctional family life.

After rehearsing a scene where costar Deen has to throw her to the ground, Lohan "bounced up with a smile," the author describes. "That was great! Want to do it again?" she asks Schrader in the article. When the scene ends, someone compliments Lohan's work. She answers: "Well, I've got a lot of experience with that from my dad."

"She didn't elaborate, and no one asked," Rodrick writes.

For newly single Zoë Saldana, it seems like dogs really are a woman's best friend.

After calling it quits with on-and-off-again beau Bradley Cooper just before New Year's, the actress stepped out Tuesday near her Silver Lake, Calif., home to walk her new rescue pooch, Mugsy.

"She's adorable and super smart," Saldana Tweeted on Dec. 12 after bringing home the wiry-haired pup, whom a friend helped name.

While Cooper may no longer be apart of the star's life, her decision to adopt Mugsy could have been influenced by the actor. In November, Saldana scored some bonding time with her then-boyfriend's beloved chow/retriever mix Charlotte on a Thanksgiving day dog walk.

Man Wins $1 Million Lotto - Then Dies of Cyanide Poisoning: Police

01/08/2013 at 04:45 PM EST

Urooj Khan

Illinois Lottery/EPA/Landov

Urooj Khan won a million dollar lottery, but he lost his life the day after collecting his winnings. Now, the authorities suspect that the Chicago man was the victim of foul play.

Pathologists initially believed Khan died of natural causes, but have since changed their minds after a relative asked them to re-examine his death and they detected lethal amounts of cyanide in his blood.

"We are investigating the incident as a murder and are working closely with the medical examiner," Chicago Police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton tells PEOPLE.

Khan, a 46-year-old hardworking entrepreneur from India, bought the two lottery scratch-off tickets at a convenience store near his home last June.

Moments after scratching off the second ticket, he reportedly jumped into the air and screamed, "I hit a million!" then handed the clerk a hundred-dollar bill out of gratitude.

On July 19, Khan cashed in his ticket and received a check (minus taxes) for $425,000, some of which he planned on donating to a local children's hospital.

The next day he was back at work at his string of dry cleaning businesses. But that evening, shortly after going to bed, he awoke shrieking in agony.

Shabana Ansari, 32, his wife of 12 years, telephoned paramedics and he was rushed to nearby St. Francis Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead several hours later.

Khan's blood sample showed no signs of carbon monoxide, opiates or alcohol. And because there were no visible signs of trauma to his body and no evidence of foul play, pathologists didn't believe an autopsy needed to be performed.

His death was attributed to hardening of the arteries and Khan was eventually buried at a local cemetery.

But before a week had passed, an unidentified relative telephoned the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, saying that he suspected foul play. A morgue worker took another look at Khan's blood sample and this time discovered lethal levels of cyanide.

"If a family member has a concern that seems valid, we take those seriously," Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina tells the Chicago Tribune. "We can't [ordinarily] look for every toxin under the sun like a CSI episode."

Homicide detectives are currently piecing together Khan's final days and deciding whether or not to exhume his body.

Aurora Shooting: Officer Emotionally Recalls Slipping on Bloody Floor

01/07/2013 at 04:10 PM EST

James Holmes

University of CO/Splash News Online

As a body armor-clad James Holmes calmly told police about the explosives in his apartment, other officers raced to save victims of the movie-theater massacre, the first witnesses testified Monday in Holmes's preliminary hearing.

Officer Justin Grizzle choked up on the stand recalling slipping on the bloody floor as he encountered "several bodies throughout the theater laying motionless." He testified that, as he drove six victims to the hospital, "there was so much blood I could hear it sloshing around in the back of my car."

Among the victims of the Aurora, Colo., shooting he transported was Caleb Medley, a stand-up comedian who was shot in the head and is the last victim still hospitalized. Grizzle said Medley made a "god-awful" gurgling sound as he tried to breathe.

"I shouted, 'Don’t f–––ing die on me,'" Grizzle testified.

The first witness, Officer Jason Oviatt, testified that Holmes, a 25-year-old former neuroscience student, told them explosives in his apartment would go off if they were tripped.

"He was very relaxed," Oviatt testified. "It was like there weren't normal emotional responses."

The hearing, in Centennial, Colo., is to determine if there is sufficient evidence against Holmes on the 166 criminal charges in the July 20 attack, which killed 12 people and injured at least 70.

Some of the survivors are expected to testify during the week-long proceeding. Before this week, authorities had avoided discussing details and evidence about the highly publicized attack.

Bradley Cooper's Fans Sing 'Happy Birthday' in Palm Springs

01/06/2013 at 03:00 PM EST

Bradley Cooper didn't necessarily have the wildest of birthday celebrations, but his special day certainly didn't go unnoticed.

The Silver Linings Playbook star, who turned 38 on Saturday, was greeted by a slew of screaming fans when he arrived on the red carpet at the 24th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in Palm Springs, Calif.

"Bradley started interacting with his fans and then they broke out into song, chanting 'Happy birthday to you,'" an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Running late into the event because of the fan holdup, Cooper whisked by many of the reporters, and when asked about his birthday plans, answered with a smile, "I'm here!"

But the birthday surprises didn't end there.

After being honored with a Desert Palm Achievement Award presented by Playbook director David O. Russell, PEOPLE's former Sexiest Man Alive was given a shoutout by event host Mary Hart, who insisted the entire room sing "Happy Birthday" to the actor.

"It seemed very unexpected," the onlooker adds. "He seemed a little shy and embarrassed by it, but while managing to smile still."

It looks like Taylor Swift and Harry Styles are having a relaxing holiday ... with fans!

Before Christmas, the couple enjoyed the snowy slopes of Park City, Utah, but now they're making new friends in the Caribbean.

"@taylorswift13 thanks for the pic and nice meeting you! #13 #bestvacation," Twitter user @emmycfield, identified as Emily Canfield, wrote in a post Thursday.

"It was crazy she was walking into the restaurant I was walking out of [to] meet her in the parking lot," Canfield added in a photo posted in Instagram.

Canfield does not identify where she is, however several other Twitter users that posted photos of Swift and Styles claimed to be in the Caribbean.

"British Virgin Islands have no idea what's coming their way," @LilHELDD, who is identified as Hannah Held, wrote on Dec. 29. A couple of days, she later breathlessly posted, "Just bought Taylor swift and Harry Styles a drink. No joke. #whathappensinBVI…. DEAD FREAKIN SERIOUS I'm gonna try to get a pic with them but I'm scared."

She was, however, successful! Held later posted a picture of Styles with two unidentified women and wrote, "Still in a daze." A picture of Swift with four women also reads, "She's awesome. Better in person. I LOVE TSWIFT."

Another fan, @ban_ANNIE, who is identified as Annie Donatelli, said on Twitter that she's in the Caribbean, and wrote, "I actually made friends with fish and Taylor Swift and Harry Styles!!! So ha!!!"

To accompany a photo she posted with both singing stars, Donatelli added. "I've never been so happy."

Nicki Minaj wasn't always sure about becoming a judge on American Idol.

Addressing "a judgmental culture in hip-hop," the rapper recently told The Hollywood Reporter, "Sometimes you are afraid of being too famous because it's almost, like, is that even cool? Being that accessible, someone you see on TV every week? I never pictured myself as that type of person. I'm still surprised that I decided to do it."

Equally shocked at her own decision to join the show is Minaj's one-time rival Mariah Carey.

"I was on the fence about the whole thing," Carey says. "I got approached by all the shows. [My husband Nick Cannon] said I should do it because it's the top. It's the cream of the crop. And I felt like, 'Do the show that's produced massive stars who have had major careers.' "

Adds Carey, "I know everyone's like, 'We can't have schmaltzy answers.' Well guess what? Some people still want to be inspired. Some people need to have that kind of validation and to feel like, if this person did it, then I can. And I do have one of those stories."

Their hesitation about joining the show isn't the only thing they have in common. Apparently, both judges are rocking some skimpy attire.

When asked if she has to tone down her look to fit the Idol mold, Minaj – who was caught screaming at Carey on camera in October – said simply, "I could think of at least one other person [who] shows more cleavage and skin than me."

Julianne Hough: I Was Physically Abused as a Child

01/02/2013 at 04:45 PM EST

When Julianne Hough was 10 years old, she lived in London, away from her parents in Utah, studying dance.

That's when the abuse began, she says.

"I was abused, mentally, physically, everything," she says in Cosmopolitan magazine's February issue, on newsstands Jan. 8.

While attending the prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Arts, she says the adults around her took advantage of her being without parental supervision: "I was 10 years old looking like I was 28, being a very sensual dancer."

"I was a tormented little kid who had to put on this sexy facade because that was my job and my life," she adds. "But my heart was the same, and I was this innocent little girl. I wanted so much love."

The actress, now 24, says the abuse became worse "when I started hitting puberty, when I started becoming a woman and stopped being a little girl."

Her classmates included future Dancing with the Stars pros Mark Ballas and Julianne's brother Derek Hough, both also children at the time. They had formed their own pop music group when Julianne was 12 performing in the U.S. and the U.K.

Hough declines to say who abused her or provide other details.

"I'm a very forgiving person, and I don't want to hurt anybody," she says. "What's past is past."

But the painful emotions surfaced during filming of her latest movie, Safe Haven, opening Feb. 14, about a girl who survives an abusive ex-boyfriend and accepts the love of a widower, played by Josh Duhamel.

During one particularly difficult scene, she says, "I went from bawling to containing to laughing to crying again. Josh was crying. I think it was the most therapeutic moment of my life."

As for her own love life, Hough says that she and boyfriend Ryan Seacrest work to find time for each other around their busy schedules.

"We love what we do," she says. "We take pride in giving it our all, but then when we're alone, we really focus in on going to dinners and being extra-romantic and affectionate and just being there for each other."
